Welcome to the Cancer Treatment Center at Doctors Hospital. We want to thank you for placing your confidence in the cancer care center, physicians and staff. We have taken great care that our programs and services offer patients and their families the most convenient and comprehensive care possible. The Cancer Treatment Center at Doctors Hospital enjoys a fine reputation. Caring for patients since 1987, we are the first established cancer program in Laredo. Patients trust Doctors Hospital for our strong, multi-disciplinary approach to fighting cancer. This means coordination of physicians and healthcare professionals to study, discuss, and manage individual cancer cases.
Cancer brings difficult questions. No one has all the answers, but we certainly have many. And answers are our best way of fighting back.

Treatment
The following components are essential to the success of a cancer program: Cancer Committee, Cancer Conferences, Quality Management, and a Cancer Data Management System. Through ongoing efforts, we can proudly say that all contents are in place at our center.
Multi-Disciplinary Approach:
Multi-disciplinary Cancer Committee provides leadership for the cancer program. It strives to identify and prioritize quality issues with measurable outcomes that relate to the critical elements of the program.
American College of Surgeon's Commission on Cancer mandates multidisciplinary cancer conferences. Our center is unique; we offer weekly cancer conferences, which provide a key educational stimulus for clinicians. The conferences bring together physicians and other healthcare professionals from all appropriate disciplines to discuss cancer cases diagnosed and treated at our facility. The conferences provide a forum for open discussion and are essential for the patient management process and patient outcomes. Participating specialists include a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, surgeon, pathologist, radiologist, a dietician and the social services department.
Quality Management program ensures the delivery of the highest quality of patient care possible through the clinical services rendered to the patients.
Cancer Registry provides critical patient information in order to evaluate and direct treatment. The cancer registry is a database maintained by a Certified Tumor Registrar. The data system is designed for the collection, management and analysis of data on persons with the diagnosis of cancer. Each patient is closely followed, and the data is then reported to the Texas Department of Health. This locally produced statistical data will help to determine the most successful treatment options available to cancer patients in the future. Although state law requires the reporting of cancer cases, Doctors Hospital Cancer Registry goes beyond m monitoring data and using it to evaluate diagnostics and treatments.
Radiation Therapy Radiation therapy is the use of high energy X-rays to treat cancer cells; it is one of the major treatment modalities for cancer. The equipment used to plan and deliver radiation therapy precisely delivers a dose of radiation and destroys cancer cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Treatments are brief; sometimes a matter of minutes, and each case is directed and closely followed by the radiation oncologist.
Chemotherapy Chemotherapy is the treatment of a tumor with special drugs designed to destroy cancer cells. With the development of new chemotherapeutic agents, many patients do not encounter the negative effects of the past. Today, patients seldom experience nausea, hair loss, or fatigue. Some patients may use continuous infusion pumps, worn on the body, which allow them to go about their daily routines. Your treatment program will be designed with your personal and medical needs as a primary concern.
Pediatric Cancer Care Doctors Hospital has two pediatric medical oncologists/hematologists on staff who may be seen on a monthly basis.
Jaime Estrada, MD Pediatric Medical Oncologist/Hematologist
Gerardo Quezada, MD Pediatric Medical Oncologist/Hematologist
Clinical Trials Our cancer program is an affiliate of the Southwest Oncology Group and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Through collaborative measures we will be offering cancer patients access to clinical trials. Clinical trials are research studies that test new approaches to the treatment of cancer. The Cancer Treatment Center at Doctors Hospital will be the only facility offering these services within a 150 mile radius.
Community Outreach Doctors Hospital participates in community education seminars at schools, organizations, and businesses. Cancer is best treated when detected early, and so we focus our efforts in providing cancer screening services and educational programs to the community.
